In Arizona in 2014, it is estimated that 4,520 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 780 women will die from this disease.
Susan G. Komen® Southern Arizona is the local resource for women and men who need breast cancer education, screening, diagnostic and support services. 75% of the monies raised by Komen Southern Arizona stay in southern Arizona to fund breast health programs for those who would not otherwise have access to screening and treatment. In 2014, Komen SAZ awarded $204,763 to 8 education, screening and diagnostics and treatment programs in southern Arizona provided by 8 local organizations that serve the uninsured and underinsured in its 6-county service area (Pima, Santa Cruz, Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, and Yuma counties) . Since 1999, Komen SAZ has invested $5.5 million in life-saving education, screening and treatment programs in our service area.
In the last 5 years, Komen SAZ’s community grants program has funded:
• 12,272 low-cost or no-cost clinical breast exams and mammograms
• 17,832 individuals breast health and breast cancer education
• 1,931 services addressing psychological and social aspects of breast cancer
The remaining 25% of funds raised are invested in the Susan G. Komen® Research Grant Program managed at the national level. In 2014, Komen Southern Arizona contributed $133,631 to national research. In addition, since 1982, over $2.75M has returned to the University of Arizona. To learn more about Susan G. Komen’s research investment, click here.
