Grant Programs - Prospective Applicants

On July 20th of this year, the Southern Arizona Komen Affiliate will issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) to non-profit organizations to organize and provide breast cancer programs in Southern Arizona. This year we will continue to offer our Breast Cancer Treatment Block Grant as well as multiple Screening, Treatment Education and Prevention Grants, which address meeting the needs of the medically underserved in our service area. Grant proposals will be due back to the local affiliate on September 14, 2007. A Grants Review Committee will review all proposals and make funding recommendations to the Komen Board of Directors in October. A diverse review panel that includes representatives from the medical and research communities, breast cancer survivors, community leaders and health educators will evaluate all grants for funding recommendations. The Board of Directors will make the final determination and grants will be awarded in early December.

Below we outline the grant opportunities now open for applications. Please carefully read the specified guidelines for each award mechanism. In addition, please note that we are offering a grant workshop for potential grantees and former recipients. This grant workshop will be mandatory for all organizations which have previously received funds from the Southern Arizona Affiliate in the past. The intent of the workshop is to inform the interested community on the priority areas set by the community needs assessment and the Board of Directors of the Southern Arizona Affiliate and to provide expert instruction on the granting mechanisms including instruction on completing the application for each of the categories. Prior grantees must attend to be considered in compliance at the time of grant submission. Only one representative from each organization must attend. Workshop details are provided below.

At the Southern Arizona Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, our promise is our mission - ending breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find the cures within the defined service area of Southern Arizona to include Pima, Santa Cruz, Cochise, Graham, Greenlee and Yuma counties. This year we are soliciting grants for three special programs:

STEP Grants

Breast Cancer Treatment Block Grants

Small Grants Program

STEP Grants

The Screening, Treatment and Education Program supports grants to community, non-profit organizations that provide innovative programs in areas of unmet breast health and/or breast cancer education/outreach,screening, or treatment support. This year the Southern Arizona Komen Affiliate will support STEP grant proposals of up to $40,000. Projects that provide unique services to the medically under-served and/or minority populations of the Southern Arizona area will receive the highest priority score. Grants are available for up to one (1) year.

The Southern Arizona Komen Affiliate seeks grant proposals that:

  • Address unmet needs in the community;
  • Utilize risk assessment strategies for targeted screening and prevention education among high risk women;
  • Increase the quality and quantity of care, especially for the under-served and minority population;
  • Minimize duplication of services within a reasonable distance of travel.

This year, priority will be given to those programs that apply innovative approaches to meet the breast health needs of under-served and minority populations in our service area.

Applications are due September 14, 2007 and will cover the grant period of December 1, 2007 - November 30, 2009. All grant awards are for one year only. All STEP awards are subject to a 6-month progress review. Please click on the link below or call the affiliate office at 520-319-0155 to receive a Request for Proposal.

Small Grants Program

In addition to the STEP and Treatment Block grants, the Southern Arizona Komen Affiliate also provides several small grant opportunities throughout the year:

Travel Scholarships — less than $1,500
Travel grants can be requested throughout the year to provide travel assistance to grantees, health care professionals and advocates to attend, participate in, and/or present at meetings, conferences, or symposia that increase community knowledge of breast health and breast cancer and facilitate the exchange of ideas and communication between the scientific and lay public communities. These funds can be requested throughout the year in letter form. Please contact the local office, (520) 319-0155, for more information on eligibility requirements for travel scholarships.

Small Grants — less than $1,000
Small grant requests can be made throughout the year in a simple letter format and will be considered for small money requests that promote the mission of the Foundation and increase the capacity of effective breast health programs. These grants are not intended to support salary, services for an individual, or the development of materials for breast health/cancer projects (see STEP award category). The small grant funds ARE to support some of the "unexpected" costs associated with a project (e.g., purchase of educational materials, food costs at presentation sessions, survivor recognition).

Conference Grants — less than $5,000
Conference grants are available to support local scientific or educational conferences, symposia and meetings with an emphasis on those that enhance the interaction between the advocate and the healthcare and scientific communities.

Grant Application Technical Workshop

Because the Southern Arizona Affiliate is focused on increasing the impact of it’s funding, we are holding a Grant Training Workshop on August 14th from 10 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. to be held at the Girl Scouts, Sahuaro Council, 4300 E. Broadway Blvd. This workshop is mandatory for previously funded grantees and highly recommended for all organizations considering submitting a proposal for September 15th 2007. Registration is free but required to assure space and adequate materials. Please see link below for additional details, map and contact information.
