Students for the Cure

Students for the Cure® is an elementary (K-5) health and wellness curriculum designed for teachers who believe that health-related issues, physical activity, and community service are essential to the development of children but lack the time and/or materials to effectively incorporate them into daily lesson plans. The Students for the Cure is made up of three components:

    * Physical Activity - The goal of the physical activity component is to increase students' cardiovascular fitness level through structured plan and jogging or walking on a designated course 2-3 times per week. The program is designed to get students ready to participate in a Race for the Cure®, benefiting the local Affiliate.
    * Health Standards - The goal of the health and wellness component is to encourage students to examine their own health behaviors and make positive changes that will benefit them now and into adulthood. Research your state’s health standards and integrate them using real life situations and applications.
    * Community Service - The goal of the community service component is to increase students' awareness of breast cancer and provides the opportunity for them to be active participants in the effort to find a cure. Working in conjunction with the local Affiliate, students raise money to support life-saving programs locally and internationally.

Students for the Cure can also be adapted to for colleges or universities. Central Oklahoma created a program that involves the surrounding universities, known as Cowboys for the Cure and Sooners for the Cure. They add a separate registration opportunity for students and fans that are either attending the football game, the Race, or both. The participants that opt into the program receive a Race shirt, Race registration, and a commemorative t-shirt.
